John Guliak is a Canadian singer-songwriter who has been performing roots music in Canada for over 20 years.  John's music contrasts the isolation of his prairie upbringing with his later experiences in the urban landscapes of Glasgow, Winnipeg, Vancouver, Edmonton and Toronto.

The songs that result from this perspective have been compared to those of other uniquely Canadian voices such as Gordon Lightfoot and Leonard Cohen.  His whiskey and cigarettes baritone, described in Nerve Magazine as, "one of those character voices that should almost be trademarked," places him in the company of such singers as Merle Haggard, The Handsome Family's Brent Sparks and Rufus Wainwright.

In 2004, he released 7 Stories and 13 Songs, the second CD for Mint Records that follows his 2002 début, The Black Monk. In 2016 he self-released Fluke or Flounder which was produced by Paul Rigby. You can read reviews of all these recordings here: https://johnguliak.com/press

John's live shows have been applauded for their honesty and intensity whether he performs solo, as part of the duo, Kodiak, with Jason Kodie, or with his band Prairie Flounder with Jason Kodie (keys, accordion), Tom Murray (bass), Darrek Anderson (pedal steel, mandolin), and Marek Tyler (drums).

In 2015 and 2016 he attended the Musician in Residence Program at The Banff Arts Centre and recently attended a 3 week residency at Rest For the Wicked in Brussels, Belgium.

AB/BC Songwriters in the Round Fall 2017 Tour with Amy Nelson, David P Smith, Carter Felker, and John Guliak

I am very excited to hit the road with this very entertaining and talented collection of performers this Fall starting off in Edmonton and finishing up in Salmon Arm for 20 shows in 20 days. i am going to let David P Smith do the talking here:

It’s 1924 and there’s a party going down at the farmhouse, one of the bigger farms, a hub in the district.  A banjo player, a couple of guitarists, and an accordion player migrate to the kitchen where they begin exchanging songs.  An old mountain ballad, a ribald…

Paul and i quite liked this take too but we were torn between the sparse production of the last version and this one…

Pre-release treats - Serving Time (Alt Version 1) Podcast

at the bottom of this page is an alternate version of my song a that appears on my upcoming album Fluke or Flounder. i first wrote Serving Time more than 25 years ago after a difficult breakup but the lyrics began to feel whiney and cliched so i dropped it but never really forgot it. a few years back i decided to try to revive it by writing new lyrics and, after kicking it around for a while, i managed to do just that.

when it came time to record Serving Time, Producer Paul Rigby and i talked a fair bit…Read more
